HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Although it’s early May, the sun angle is now the same as in late July and early August, and a local dermatologist told us that you’re probably getting a lot more sun than you think.
Rachael Talbot, with Dermatology Access, just says of normal daily activities over the course of a year, your sun exposure adds up to 48 hours, so no matter to what season, protecting your skin is extremely important.
„Mostly you should always protect yourself when standing in the sun,“ said Talbot. „We recommend every day, not just when you’re at the pool or on the beach.“
She says that most skin damage occurs before the age of 20, but the effects will show later in life. Talbot says sun exposure causes 80 to 90 percent of skin aging. She adds that one in five people suffer from skin cancer during their lifetime and all five sunburns double the risk of skin cancer.
According to Talbot, sunscreen sprays and lotions are equally effective. But it does not recommend SPF 50 because there is little difference in protection with much more chemicals.
Talbot says it is also best to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out to fully immerse it in your skin for maximum effectiveness. She also recommends re-applying every two hours.
